Citizens on a cleanliness drive
ITANAGAR, May 20: The members of Nijer Ajum Self Help Group (SHG) of IDEA under Banderdewa Circle cleaned the surroundings of Ania colony today.
They cleaned all the gutters surroundings of the houses and collected all the waste and disposed it properly. This service created awareness in the colony about cleanliness and proper disposal of wastage. Many of the colony people gave full support to the SHG members.
The cleanliness drive was conducted under the leadership of Binti Tajum, president, Prey Tajo secretary and Pathe Yayu as social service captain.

ITANAGAR, May 20: One of the most beautiful places of state, Ziro valley blessed with enchanting beauty is today fighting hard to maintain the status of a ‘tourist paradise’. Illegal encroachment and deteriorating law and order situation is posing serious threat to image of Ziro valley as a hot tourist destination. The illegal encroachment is so rampant that most of the government owned quarters are vanishing from the scene.

“In the last 10 years many buildings have come up in our colony. In front of the govt quarter, large buildings are coming up. During winter we do not get access to natural sunlight because of such illegal construction,” told a resident of medical colony, Hapoli.

“Years ago when they started construction near my quarter, I had protested them. There was little space in front of my quarter where my kids used to play. But builders started construction work right near the entrance of my quarter. My children cried a lot seeing that space being encroached,” told another resident of Medical colony.
With administration going weak on such illegal encroachers, it has encouraged even those government servants to carry out construction work in their own government quarters.

Ever since he left, no other deputy commissioners have ever dared to take action against the encroachers. The rampant encroachment is killing the beauty of Ziro which is serious cause of concern for everyone.
In the last few years, the once peaceful Ziro valley has witnessed sudden sprout in crime rate. The incidents of robbery and loot are being reported quite regularly. Most of the residents prefer to stay indoor during evening hour because of such incidents.
“It has become very risky to walk alone in isolated area during evening hours. Incidents like snatching of pursue and mobile phones are becoming quite common. In fact law and order situation is so bad that I feel more safe when I am at Itanagar than in Ziro,” told Yachang Tacho, a keen observer, who is editor of English weekly The Subansiri, published from Hapoli town.
Some of the local residents also feel that cleanliness in the district headquarter need to improve.

ITANAGAR, May 20: A high level expert team led by Higher and Technical Education Director Dr. Joram Begi visited eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh for selection of sites for college and polytechnics.
The teams visited Miao, Jairampur, Deomali, Khonsa and Longding
At Miao, the team along with Minister for Civil Supply and Mines Minister inspected the ITI Balinong with 104 acres of land out of which 79 acres will be earmarked for the polytechnic development as offered by the public of Balinong.

At Jairampur, Agriculture Minister Setong Sena along with ADC, Head Gam took the team to Kanbila site located near river Khatang.
The next day the high level committee left for Khonsa and Longding. Though the day coincided with AAPSU bandh the team went ahead with the visit in the interest of the students. The Nocte Students Union and the administration of Khonsa provided security and facilitated their arrival at Khonsa.
The team held a public meeting at circuit house which was attended by the public of Khonsa and Charju, MLA Kamtok Lowang, Deputy Commissioner W Lowang, and local public leaders.
The public of Charju have been opposing shifting of the Govt. College at Deomali from Charju. Though the government has decided to compensate with the establishment of the polytechnic at Charju utilizing the existing buildings, the public were adamant to their demand. Their demands were either retain the college or give compensation for depriving them from their cultivation land for the last 15 years.
Dr. Begi explained to the public on the issues and also about the new proposal. Responding to a public memorandum, Begi assured to look into their demands and find out some options.
The high level team arrived at Longding in the late afternoon. The team accompanied by Tangham Wangham, Parliamentary Secretary IPR, ADC N, Wangsu, Y.Lukham ZPM and other public leaders inspected Ongoshon area for establishment of the college and VKV school.
Dr Begi also consented to establish a VKV at Longding.

unemployed youths to come up with self-
He was speaking during the first graduation ceremony of World Environment Protection & Social Welfare Equipping Programme (WEP & SWEP) at Doimukh centre here today.
He said unemployment is a global problem and the people of Arunachal need to find alternative ideas to get themselves employed.
He suggested that instead of looking and depending on limited government services, the people should promote and engage themselves in agriculture and horticulture activities as a tool of poverty reduction in the state. Further, the government as well as private enterprises and NGO's should take active role in extending skill development training to youngsters on regular basis to enable them to upgrade their skills in different activities.
Speaking on environment protection, he called upon the people to protect and conserve flora and fauna and urged the people to plant more and more trees for better environment.
He also advised the students to focus more on their studies with an action plan to achieve the desired goal.
Head of Project, NEEPCO, Sasi Baruah, All Arunachal Pradesh Public Transport Federation (AAPTF) president Takar Goi also spoke on the occasion and highlighted on importance of environment and its protection.
Later, Sonam distributed certificates to the trainees who had successfully completed their two months project training on dairy, piggery, fishery, horticulture, and rubber plantation and environment protection.

PPA endorses students’ demand, seeks white paper on financial status
ITANAGAR, May 20: Peoples’ Party of Arunachal (PPA) today called upon the state government to respond positively to the various demands of All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), civil societies and other political for white paper on state’s financial position in, among others.

Parents, NEHMC&H authorities compromise
ITANAGAR, May 20: Following the May 16 incident wherein college properties of North East Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital (NEHMC&H) were vandalized reportedly by some enraged students, the NEHMC&H chairman and parents/guardians had a joint meeting the next day in which the parents “agreed to refund the damages caused to college properties after a proper assessment of quantum of damages”.
While pledging their full support for smooth functioning of the college, the parents appealed the college authorities “to withdraw the police cases filed against the students”, besides assuring that the “students will seek apology from the authorities including teachers”. They also apologized for the students’ “misconduct” and appealed the teachers to come back and resume their duties as the exams are going to start from June 11, said a release.

ITANAGAR, May 20: Jering Matkir Society (JMS), Itanagar unit felicitated Shania Kayem Mize, this year's topper in APPSCCE and Sonia Ketan, who completed her LLM in 1st class from Christ University, Bangalore at a function here this evening.
Attending the programme, the senior members of JMS advised the APPSCCE topper to work towards the development of Arunachal Pradesh. The society expressed the hope that the other JMS members would get inspiration from the achievement of Shania Mize and follow her footprints. Both the achievers were presented mementoes.
The Society urged all the successful candidates of APPSCCE' 2012 to render their yeoman services for the betterment of Arunachal Pradesh.

Pioneer football tourney begins

RUKSIN, May 20: The first ever Pioneer Soccer Football Tourney organized in memory of late Bei Saroh of Rayang and late Takong Taki of Lingka, HGBs, began at Ruksin General Ground today.
The first ever pioneer tourney in the memory of late Bei Saroh of Rayang and Late Takong Taki of Lingka, both were head Gaon Burah, who had made immense contribution to the societies.
The opening game was played between Lingka Eleventh and Mecca United of Ngorlung

Earlier, inaugurating the tournament, East Siang Deputy Commissioner Talem Tapok appreciated Ruksin Area Youth Front (RAYF) for conducting the touranment saying that such sporting activities foster unity and brotherhood among the youths. He advised the budding players to show their hidden talents. Stating that Ruksin area is located at a vulnerable state boundary bordering to Assam, he urged the youths to do the best for maintaining interrelations between the people of two states.
The RAYF president Tadi Jonnom has recalled the contributions of both the late Gaon Burahs.
Eight teams from different villages of Ruksin Block are participating the tournament conducted by Ruksin Area Youth Front (RAYF).

A horrendous experience
Dear Editor,
It was a painful journey on the way back from Agartala to Guwahati and then to the Pasighat on 17th May.
We reached ISBT, Guwahati at around 5: 30 pm and bought the Guwahati-
Moreover on reaching Silapather, all the passengers got down. Surprised I asked the driver what was going on. He replied that the bus won’t go beyond Silapather. I showed him the ticket but the driver ignored it by saying, it was not his problem. Then I rang up the counter at the number given on the ticket and asked him to adjust us in a bus going to Pasighat, but he refused. I told him that it is an illegal act.
After I threatened to lodge a complaint under the Consumer Protection Act, the person at the counter finally called me. He asked me get half of the fare from Silapathar counter which we got.
According to Consumer Protection Act 1986 it is our right to seek redressal against the unfair trade practices or restrictive trade or exploitation of customers.

Stop the cheap trick
Dear Editor,
Through your esteemed daily I would like to request coaching institutes in our state not to use the name of such candidates who get through different examinations, who haven't attended the classes even after joining it. No doubt they are playing a commendable role in moulding our students for various competitive exams but using the name of others to popularise oneself is misleading and embarrassing besides being wrong morally. So please stop using this sort of cheap tricks to lure students into joining them especially.

Now, what I would like to share is that, recently, I have had a conversation with a SSA teacher, who is posted in a village somewhere in the Changlang border. After knowing certain facts about the teachers there, I was really anguished and antagonized. The teacher told me that in that village there is no one to question them about their apathy towards their duties. I may not understand the arduous work the teachers undergo. But I feel that when you are paid for it, you should not neglect your work, especially when a child's future is connected with it. We regard teachers, as our child's second parents and handover our children to the teachers, ones they go to the school. How can a teacher be so careless?
Now the next academic session is soon to begin. I would like to request all the teachers to kindly do their duties sincerely. Your hard work can act as a catalyst to a child’s life. The payment you get after your long hours of teaching might be less, but I believe that the blessings you get from an unknown number of parents counts more.

Towards slum-
The slum population has become a major impediment for India in its way to become a one of the developed countries in right perspective. According to a report, Asia was a home to more than half of the world’s slum population or about 581 million people in 2005. Although, China, which is the most populated country in the world, was the home of world’s largest slum population, its slum prevalence in 2001 was lower than that of India. According to a Planning Commission survey in 2010, there was a growth of 17.8 million in the urban slum population across the country in the last decade.
Despite India equipped with policies to reduce extreme poverty and improve the lives of slum dwellers, it is said that the policies failed to create much impact on the lives of slum dwellers.
However, there is a ray hope towards making India a slum-
According to Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja, “ the Scheme will provide financial assistance to States that are willing to assign property rights to slum dwellers for provision of decent shelter and basic civic and social services for slum redevelopment, and for creation of affordable housing stock.” For the North Eastern and Special Category States, the share of the Centre would be ninety per cent including the cost of land acquisition, if required. Under RAY, 8 pilot projects in 5 states with total project cost of Rs. 446.22 crores involving Central Assistance of Rs. 197.09 crores have been approved for construction of 8400 dwelling units, the minister said.
No doubt, the Govt took right steps to give slum dwellers property rights and assistance for home loans. However, India needs policies that are more radical to improve the lives of slum dwellers within the stipulated period.
